Community Farmworkers Alliance Farmworker Justice Rally–July 25

Farmworker Justice Rally and Post Card Drop Off at Chipotle
Wednesday, July 25, 6:30 PM
Chipotle at 17th St & Broadway (864 Broadway)

CHIPOTLE- It’s time to stand true to your “sustainable” image and Sign the Fair Food Agreement with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers today!

Join us as we make a wall of postcards to drop off to the manager and hold a rally outside the Union Square store, so that they can see how many people in new york are fed up with their chipocrisy! We’re also encouraging folks to hold up a sign and get their pictures taken for the CHIPOCRISY tumblr!

For six years, Chipotle has refused to come to the table with Coalition of Immokalee Workers to sign a Fair Food Agreement, securing labor protections for workers in the fields of Florida. Despite all of the promotion of having “sustainable vegetables” and cage-free, anti-biotic free meat, Chipotle is still selling Food WithOUT Integrity.

CEO Steve Elis said that “we feel that we do not need to sign a contract to do the right thing. We do the right thing because that’s the kind of company we are…” We all know that corporations don’t just “do the right thing” without contracts that hold them accountable to their purchasing and practices.

Join us in telling CEO Steve Elis and Chipotle that we won’t listen to any more excuses. Sign the Fair Food Agreement NOW!

Help us to spread the word!

Love,

CFA

P.S. 133 Garden of Wonder Launches at Series of of Saturday Markets

Written by Frieda Lim, Slippery Slope Farm, PS133 Garden of Wonder Coordinator, PS29 Edible Community Garden Project Co-Leader At the end of our school year, PS133 was awarded a garden grant.  We went forward and created an urban demonstration green campus that showcases scalable modern systems with sub-irrigation and rain gutter gardens.  Our garden classroom is experimental.  We created what Bob Hyland’s coined “Verticans”.  These are 3 strawberry towers inspired by African Sack Gardens, but with infrastructure that we’re Beta testing as well as growing medium/compost ratios.

Our kids got to seed the garden before school let out and now we’re opening our gates so they and you can check out how things are progressing through a series of six Saturday at our Garden of Wonder Market.  The garden is still a work in progress that will generate a limited amount of produce, but a great amount of knowledge. Bob Hyland will be giving workshops and will be on hand to answer any questions that you may have.  (I will also be on hand at times) There will be garden related activities for kids.

We hope to see you starting this Saturday, July 14th from 10-1 for six consecutive Saturdays at PS133–8th Street and 4th Avenue, Park Slope!

Join us for the BFC Summer Soiree!

Beat the heat and help support the Brooklyn food movement by attending our double-backyard party on Thursday, July 26th, where we’ll enjoy delicious Ayurveda-inspired Indian food prepared by chef Mukti Banerjee and BFC sous-chefs — hot, spicy, savory, cooling fare featuring seasonal produce from Brooklyn farms — plus urban folk/soul singer/ songwriter Jen Chapin & Stephan Crump on acoustic bass, and dancing under the stars. Dinner and 1 drink is $30; cash bar.

Where: 445 6th St. (bet. 6th & 7th Aves.) in Park Slope, home of Nancy Romer, BFC General Corodinator, and Lew Friedman. Bring your friends and introduce them to the BFC! And if you want to help out with the party — shopping, assisting as a sous-chef, serving — please email nancyromer[at]gmail.com.

Will Windsor Terrace Be Without A Grocery Store?

A message from City Councilmember Brad Lander:

One week ago, Windsor Terrace residents came out in droves to a community meeting to speak out against the loss of the neighborhood’s only supermarket, Key Food, which closed its doors for the last time this week.

Together, we made clear to Walgreens – which is planning to replace the Key Food – that Windsor Terrace needs a full grocery store on the site, with affordable, fresh, high-quality food that meets the needs of the whole community. Traveling long distances for groceries is simply not an option for many in our neighborhood.

I want to let you know about a few ways that we are working to make our voices heard:

  • On Thursday, June 28 at 7 PM, the Windsor Terrace Alliance, KWT Neighbors listserv, and local elected officials are hosting a rally at the Key Food site to demand that a supermarket return to that location. For questions, or to help organize your neighbors, please email contact@windsorterracealliance.org.
  • Community members have also been collecting signatures, online and in-person, to petition Walgreens to reconsider their decision to replace the supermarket. You can view the online petition here. As of now, the petition has nearly 1,000 signatures.
  • In the short term, my office is organizing a Windsor Terrace Community Grocery Carpool. If you need rides to the grocery store, or can offer rides, please …

Since last week’s community meeting, Walgreens’ representatives have not provided our community with answers about the status of their real estate transaction or their willingness to reconsider their options for the Key Food property. Next week, I will be joining community leaders at a meeting with Walgreens’ corporate leadership – along with Borough President Marty Markowitz, Assemblyman Jim Brennan, and Brooklyn Community Board 7 – to ask for answers to our questions, and to continue to make it clear that a full grocery store is absolutely vital to Windsor Terrace.

I will continue to work with you in the days to come and hope to see you at next Thursday’s rally.

Brad
